I amds transferin all my data to a USB HDD and it has stopped working. Now it detects the drive but cant start it. The MBR is corrupted somehow and it wont work at all. Its a USB 250 Gig drive by Freecom. Cant access it at all, not listed in Explorer.
It toppled over (on a carpet) and now wont work. Ive THROWN internal drives accross the romm FFS and they still worked.
Its fucked? Or is there a way to recover without having to spend a month with it at the repairers?
IT SUCKEDS!

Had the same with one of my external hard drivers a year or so ago (Maxtor 80gb) and the power had fucked to it etc ... You need to see if the hard drive is knackered or its just the enclosure as the cables can come loose, which may have happened Failling that, you can recover data from dead hard drives using GetBackData for NTFS (there is a FAT version if you use FAT32) you can download NTFS one here www.runtime.org/gdbnt.zip and use: (Name: Enemene on WWW / Serial: BJAHEYEULBERMB) and recover your data that way Hope it helps!

oh forgot to add, clearing the MBR might help u do in command line lets say ur usb drive is :F then u go to it: cd :F then fdisk /mbr that clears the boot sector so it should work again, i wouldnt try it thought before knowing that its ok for that drive
so dont try it before comfirming it from maker or its website

have you opened the casing? all it is, is a normal hard drive inside a case with an ide and a power cable coming out attached to the case ... a wire could of come loose, thats what happened a few times with mine failing that, try it in another enclosure, if not then i know a few people who have used these: www.apextechnology.co.uk/Not cheap tho

yup, its like an inch long ide cable that goes from the back of the hard drive inside, to the back plastic bit where you connect the USB cable and power etc ...
if the hard drive was still being powered, but the MBR or file system was knackered, the PC would still recognise it, but its not, so it sounds like a POWER ISSUE so it could be either something is loose, or the power on the enclosure (case) is not getting to the hard drive, meaning you'll have to buy an enclosure off eBay, they aint too expensive
